Tips for Performing a Name Search
In order to maximize your chance of retrieving a match for the person you are researching, there are a few items to keep in mind:
The service only retrieves exact matches to your search criteria. For example, if your search criteria are: "Joe Perpetrator, born 1/1/70, ssn 111 22 3333", the service will retrieve only those records which exactly match all criteria. If even one criteria item, such as first name or birthdate, is different or missing from the court database, the service will not return a match even though Joe may indeed have a criminal record.
In the example, the service will only retrieve matches for Joe Perpetrator. It will not include listings for "Joseph Perpetrator" or "Joey Perpetrator".
To maximize the likelihood of retrieving a match for Mr. Perpetrator, we suggest searching solely by the last name, "Perpetrator". Leave all other optional criteria blank. The resulting list of matches will provide all people with the last name of Perpetrator, including Ann Perpetrator, Bob Perpetrator, Joey Perpetrator, and Joseph Perpetrator. You may then select the appropriate individual to further research.
If the last name is a common last name, the resulting list may be extremely large. In this case, you may decide to narrow your search parameters by using last name plus first initial, "J Perpetrator". The resulting list will include only Joey Perpetrator and Joseph Perpetrator.
Additionally, if you include other optional criteria such as date of birth and/or social security number, the service will only retrieve listings which exactly match.
Please keep in mind that when people are arrested, they are asked to provide their birthdate and social security number. However, the arrested individual may refuse to offer his birthdate or may provide a false (alias) birthdate. The courts and law enforcement may not have a method to confirm the accuracy of the data reported. Generally, the responses provided by the arrested person are entered into the database. Therefore, to maximize the likelihood of retrieving a match, do not include these types of criteria in your search.
When reviewing the list of potential matches to your search request, you may discover that 2 entries could match the person you are researching. It is also possible that the 2 listings are for the same person.
For example, Mr. Perpetrator could have been arrested a couple times. During the first arrest, he stated his name was "Joey Perpetrator". During the second arrest, he stated his name was "Joseph Perpetrator". Each name would be entered into the database as a unique entry.
To determine whether "Joey" and "Joseph" are the same person, check the Gallery Number provided with the search results list. If the Gallery Numbers are the same, it is the same person.
The Gallery Number is a unique fingerprint number assigned to an individual during the person's first arrest. During any subsequent arrests, the person's fingerprint is taken again and matched with other prints in the database. If there is a match, the same Gallery Number is used and indicates it is the same individual regardless of inconsistent (alias) names, social security numbers, and birthdates.
Clicking on the "Case Summary" button for either listing will provide the same list of criminal court cases. In other words, the Case Summary will consolidate any and all cases associated with that Gallery Number.
