There is no charge to conduct a name search. There is a $5.00 fee for each Civil Case Summary you select to view. There is a $3.00 fee for each Judgment Financial Activity you select to view.

If there is no information available for the specific Case Summary or Judgment Financial Activity record you select, there is no charge.

Cause Number - The cause number is a statewide uniform case numbering system. The 17 digit cause number consists of four groups of characters arranged in a manner to identify the court, the year/month of filing, the case type and the filing sequence. The first group of give characters constitute the county and court identifier. (ex. 49F10 would mean "49" - Marion County and "D10" - civil court 10). The second group of four characters represents the year and month of filing. (Ex: 9403 - case filed in March of 1994). The third group of two characters designates the type of proceeding (Ex. DR - Domestic Relations). The 4th group consists of the numerical sequence that a given case is filed within a specific docket. Tips for Performing a Name Search

This service is available 24 hours/day (except 6:00pm - 10:00pm Sundays for city/county maintenance) and enables the user to conveniently search the Marion County Court database to identify whether an individual has any civil court proceedings against him or her. A search may be performed by individual name, company name or court cause number. The database is updated continuously by the Clerk's Office. There is no fee assessed when the search button is clicked to perform the query. From the resulting page, you may then click Case Summary and/or Judgment Financial Activity Report for further information. There is an additional fee if you choose these options.

You may choose to use a credit card for instant access. There is a $6.12 charge assessed to your credit card when a Civil Case Summary Search is conducted.

Please contact the Township Small Claims Court for request for information on Small Claims Court proceedings. The Marion County Clerk's database does not maintain Small Claims Court information.

The Clerk's Office does not verify information in its database. It merely records information from the Marion County Court System. The database was established in 1988. Events that occurred prior to that year may not be included in the database. For a comprehensive limited criminal history, which includes events prior to 1988, please use CivicNet's Limited Criminal History service.

In order to maximize your chance of retrieving a match for the person you are researching, there are a few items to keep in mind:

The service only retrieves exact matches to your search criteria. For example, if your search criteria are: "Joe Perpetrator", the service will retrieve only those records which exactly match all criteria. If even one criteria item, is different or missing from the court database, the service will not return a match even though Joe may indeed have a civil record.

In the example, the service will only retrieve matches for Joe Perpetrator. It will not include listings for "Joseph Perpetrator" or "Joey Perpetrator".

To maximize the likelihood of retrieving a match for Mr. Perpetrator, we suggest searching solely by the last name, "Perpetrator". Leave all other optional criteria blank. The resulting list of matches will provide all people with the last name of Perpetrator, including Ann Perpetrator, Bob Perpetrator, Joey Perpetrator, and Joseph Perpetrator. You may then select the appropriate individual to further research.

If the last name is a common last name, the resulting list may be extremely large. In this case, you may decide to narrow your search parameters by using last name plus first initial, "J Perpetrator". The resulting list will include only Joey Perpetrator and Joseph Perpetrator.

Additionally, if you are searching by company name and you include other optional criteria such as party type, case type, court ID or date range, the service will only retrieve listings which exactly match.

You may also search by cause number. The 17 digit cause number is a statewide uniform case numbering system consisting of four groups of characters arranged in a manner to identify the court, the year and month of filing, the case type and the filing sequence.

When reviewing the list of potential matches to your search request, you may discover that 2 entries could match the person you are researching. It is also possible that the 2 listings are for the same person.

For example, Mr. Perpetrator could have multiple civil cases. During the first case, he stated his name was "Joey Perpetrator". During the second case, he stated his name was "Joseph Perpetrator". Each name would be entered into the database as a unique entry.

Clicking on the "Case Summary" button will provide the civil court cases. Clicking on the "Judgment Detail" button will provide the civil court judgements for the parties
